VITILIGO AND NUTRITION

as salaam alaikum,
According to ibn Qayyim Al Jawziyyah (RA), in his book, “the medicine of the prophet,” Salah the alaihi wa Salem, the consumption of fish and milk can cause the vitiligo, this is in the section on general principle, on page 283 The Translation of johnstones of Penelope. , text Islamic society publications

Maybe this is something  that people with less melanin , skin pigment , can tolerate, or it affects all of our digestions but the white patches are not so noticeable on whiter skin, I dont know, only God knows

BONES – HELP THEM STAY STRONG

This post is about technique not about nutrients. It’s an suggestion for a practical way to use herbs thats are great for strengthening bones from the inside out.

This is an area that is new to me  and insha’allah I’ll share as I learn. Inspired by the plants on my window ledge and beginning to research parsley and its ability o tines bones from within I thought how can I make this amazing herb alhmdulilah(praise the Creator), part of my diet?

SMOOTHIES!!! or Soups.

Smoothies are better because everything is  RAW, all the vitamin and minerals stay intact

SOME VITAMINS ARE DESTROYED BY COOKING

http://www.beyondveg.com/tu-j-l/raw-cooked/raw-cooked-2f.shtml

SOME FRUITS AND VEGGIES G.I.  BECOME HIGHER DUE TO COOKING

http://www.livestrong.com/article/430497-why-does-the-cooking-method-change-the-glycemic-index/

You can buy fresh herbs quite cheaply in Arabic and Asian areas in large cities because they are so much a part of the diet.

£1 for 2 bunches of parsley , coriander/dunyia , mint, fenugreek/ methi or dill.

If you are a single person or small family sometimes herbs get wasted or end up in the recycling.

Some times washing and chopping herbs every day is a bit off putting but they have to be part of our daily diet.

So what to do?

Here’s an idea

Wash , drain and dry herbs, overnight preferably

You will need small sandwich bags, ribbon and scissors

Roughly chop herbs

parsley bag 1 (1)

Place a handful in bag, in bag should be added to other food items to make enough for 2 smoothies

parsley bag 1 (2)

Tie up bags with colour coded ribbon , P=pink P= parsley. D=dark blue D=danyia/coriander, you’ll work it out

parsley bag 1 (7)

Place bags inside another big place and place in freezer be mindful of what you have in there and use up ASAP and replace

Frozen herbs can be added to smoothies OR chopped more in frozen state and added last minutes to soups…enjoy

WHOLEFOODS – THE HUMBLE POTATO

WHOLE FOOD

I am a massive fan of wholefood in the  sense of using as much of the food as possible. The way the Creator made most if not all food produce, is that all parts can be used, not necessariy for eating but for far more than we in our urban bubbles are aware of .

For example, leaving the skin on a potato versus peeling, it will retain some of the indigestible fiber and lower the impact of the potato starch on blood glucose levels.

Potato Fat Content.

If you are going to choose the Potato Diet, as your chosen way of trying to lose weight.
You will want to know how much Fat their is in a Potato. A medium sized Baked Potato has a trace, 0.2 grams of Fat, that is obviously without any dressing. When people are using the Potato Diet to try an shed a couple of pounds, it’s always the Baked Potato Filling, that they struggle with.

It wouldn’t be worth eating a Baked Potato which has a trace of Fat, only to fill it with Cheese or another high fat filling, that would be 1 step forward, and 2 back.

Why not try a couple of these Low Fat Baked Potato Fillings, so that you keep your Potato Fat Content as low as possible.

JACKET POTATO

Low Fat Sour Cream, instead of Butter.
Low Fat Cottage Cheese, instead of Regular Cheddar Cheese.
You can also try Low Fat Cheese, but in the past, i have always found it a little dry.

So just remember, that the Potato Fat Content is basically nothing, it’s always the topping or filling that is adding Fat to your meal.

Regardless of cooking method, some dietary carbohydrates, such as potatoes and refined grains, have a higher GI score than others. Choose whole grains, such as brown rice and whole-grain wheat bread, when possible, to control postprandial blood sugar levels. Furthermore, the GI of any food is based on your body’s ability to digest and absorb carbohydrates. The exact scores and numbers vary among healthy subjects, people with diabetes and people with diabetes taking insulin. Talk to your dietitian if you need help planning meals for a diabetic diet.

WOMB HEALTH WOMB-MAN MATTERS

WOMB HEALTH

The womb- AL RAHIM, sounds like raheem, meaning mercy, is mentioned in the first verse of chapter 4 of the Quran called “an-nisa” the women.

“O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah , through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer.”

“O mankind! Have Taqwa of your Lord, Who created you from a single person, and from him He created his mate, and from them both He created many men and women, and have Taqwa of Allah through Whom you demand your mutual (rights), and revere the wombs. Surely, Allah is always watching over you.”

Ibn kathir(ra) is one of the classical Islamic great scholars but his tafsir of this verse it a little bit lacking and not surprising because a man ,although conceived in a womb,  does not possess a womb and all that goes with it. “And revere the womb by not cutting the relations of the womb, but keep and honor them, as Ibn `Abbas, `Ikrimah, Mujahid, Al-Hasan, Ad-Dahhak, Ar-Rabi`, and others have stated.

It is a great shame that over  the years too many Muslims have neglected the body and focus their Islam on the heart and the head, the intellectual and the spiritual, forgetting the body is the vehicle  that facilitates the actions of ibada/worship and pleasure.

Inspired, maasha’Allah (as God would have it be) many many moons ago by Queen Efua, an African American naturopath and healer, we are going to begin to start taking our womb health more seriously, insha’Allah (God willing)

PARSLEY…Anti-Inflammatory

Anti-inflammatory smoothie

I have been in so much pain these winter months and we are still not out of the woods, my neighbor suggested that I have bath in the morning rather than at night, to relax my muscles and thus set me up for the rest of the day’s activities
Today is the 2nd time I’m trying this and this time, advice by my mother ,who is a qualified aromatherapist, I took my oil in the bath room ; camphor, eucalyptus, frankincense and black pepper, ginger and lavender.
Oils dropped into hot bath water and left for 30 minutes to let the bath water cool and warm the actual metal enamel of the bath and let the oils infuse the air.

parsely
I then thought I should get the plants of the window a bit of water
I pondered and reflected, parsley and chives, such tough plants maashallah, I don’t water them regularly, they’re out in the sometimes freezing weather and still they’re vibrant and green
Parsley, I ponder, maybe there is something in parsley that will toughen me up to this cold British weather because my body is telling me that something is wrong the pain I am in is not helps by flax seed oil, which I take regularly
Without thinking it got some fresh parsley out of the fridge and chopped with scissor into my already blended smoothie full of anti- inflammatory but missing on vital ingredient parley
Ant inflammatory winter smoothie
• 1 large ripe, banana
• 2 slices of fresh pineapple including kore
• 3 tsp powdered cinnamon
• 2 level spoon spiralina
• 4-5cme piece fresh ginger
• 4-5cm piece of fresh haldi turmeric curcumin
• 21 stems of fresh parsley
• Blender topped up with coconut water

The banana, pineapple and cinnamon give it a sweetness that balances the green taste and it’s actually quite nice

Inshallah I will do this every time I make a smoothie, especially after reading the health benefits fresh parsley contain, alhmdulilah praise the creator.
Parsley is rich in many vital vitamins, including Vitamin C, B 12, K and A. This means parsley keeps your immune system strong, tones your bones and heals the nervous system, too. It helps flush out excess fluid from the body, thus supporting kidney function.

HEALTH BENFITS FROM CARE2.COM

Parsley is a pretty little Mediterranean herb that lends a sprinkling of color to your plate. But let’s not think of it as just a garnish—after all, parsley has been around for more than 2000 years, and boasts some time-tested benefits that you should know about.
• Parsley is rich in many vital vitamins, including Vitamin C, B 12, K and A. This means parsley keeps your immune system strong, tones your bones and heals the nervous system, too.
• It helps flush out excess fluid from the body, thus supporting kidney function. However, the herb contains oxalates, which can cause problems for those with existing kidney and gall bladder problems.
• Regular use of parsley can help control your blood pressure. The folic acid in this herb is like a tonic for your heart.
• Parsley essential oil, when massaged into the scalp, may reduce hair loss.
• Use parsley daily, and you’ll feel relief from joint pain. That’s because the herb has anti-inflammatory properties.
• Parsley tea relaxes stiff muscles and encourages digestion.
• Studies indicate that parsley—especially its essential oil—may have a role in inhibiting cancerous tumors. In fact, scientists have billed it a ‘chemoprotective’ food.

No starchy carbs

Most of us in the Westernized World, need to watch our weight, so a valuable piece of advice that a trainer gave me many years ago was ,”NO STARCHY CARBS AFTER 2PM!”

At the time I thought he was crazy, me and my Somali sister friend lived on pasta, we always added salad or veggies like broccoli but pasta was part of our main evening meal.

It took a big paradigm shift, a big shift in the way we look at things to finally change and start eating thing like curry and cabbage OR homous and salad and soup OR steam dumplings and salad and no starchy carbs like bread , pasta, cous cous or rice in the evening.
We have starchy carbs once in a while at night but not as a habit.
Starchy carbohydrates will turn to fat if they’re not burnt off.
So unless you are going to play 5 aside football or dancing all night long at a wedding, then knock them on the head as a regular meal.
If you need to put on weight then go ahead and eat starchy carbs, ideally whole meal for optimum nutrition.

Karimah Keep Fit PERFECT PORRIDGE

By Karimah Bint Dawoud, Qualified Clinical Nutritionist

It’s just started to  get  a little chilly at the morning and people love porridge. The spices are optional but are healthy ,wise ,beneficial , mainly anti-inflammatory and anti-biotic. Fantastic food to eat after training, home made spicy porridge made with cashew milk. It’s packed with L-Arginine, which is a necessary amino-acid for converting protein. It’s also good for the heart, blood vessels and immune system. It is important to remember when we get our nutrients from whole foods as opposed to tablets and processed training formulas, that there are hundreds if not thousands of un-identified components in the wholefoods that enhance absorption and well being.

porridge tex

We like to pre-soak the oatsthe night before, as it makes for quicker cooking time and optimum nutrition and digestion.

Here’s an extract from Nourishing Traditions which explains the reason why oats need to be soaked:-

“All grains contain phytic acid (an organic acid in which phosphorous is bound) in the outer layer or bran. Untreated phytic acid can combine with calcium, magnesium, copper, iron especially zinc in the intestinal track and block their absorption. This is why a diet high in unfermented whole grains may lead to serious mineral deficiencies and bone loss. The modern misguided practice of consuming large amounts of unprocessed bran often improves colon transit time at first but may lead to irritable bowel syndrome and, in the long term, many other adverse effects. Soaking allows enzyme, lactobacilli and other helpful organisms to break down and neutralize phytic acid. As little as seven hours of soaking in warm acidulated water will neutralize a large portion of phytic acid in grains. The simple practice of soaking cracked or rolled cereal grains overnight will vastly improve their nutritional benefits.”

INGREDIENTS for single portion

  • 50- 100g porridge oats (pre-soaked) depends on your size and if you are training.
  • ½ -1 tsp cinnamon powder
  • ½- 1 tsp turmeric/haldi powder
  • ½- 1 tsp ginger powder
  • 1 banana
  • 130 ml milk nut milk like almond or cashew for cooking
  • 125 milk for serving
  • Fresh or cooked fruit and/or  clear honey, to serve

METHOD

  2. When ready to cook, drain liquid off through colander and place in a small saucepan,
  3. pour in the milk
  4. Add spices and stir for 1-2 minutes
